The Main Component: The Medal
Although it is called the “Saint Benedict Cross,” it is inseparable from the Saint Benedict Medal, where the inscriptions and symbols of the cross are engraved. The medal has two sides: the front, with the image of Saint Benedict, and the reverse, dominated by the cross and its inscriptions.
The Reverse of the Medal: The Cross of Exorcism
The reverse side of the medal is where the Saint Benedict Cross is found, along with the initials that form a prayer of exorcism and protection, usually written in Latin.
On the body of the Cross:
C S S M L: Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux (The Holy Cross be my light).
N D S M D: Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux (Let not the dragon be my guide).
Around the Cross (or on the edge of the Medal):
V R S N S M V: Vade Retro Satana, Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana (Begone Satan, never tempt me with your vanities).
S M Q L I V B: Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas (What you offer is evil, drink the poison yourself).
Above the Cross:
Usually the word PAX (Peace), which is the motto of the Benedictine Order, or the Christ monogram I H S.
The Meaning of the Cross and the Sacramental
The totality of the inscriptions on the Saint Benedict Cross is a powerful formula of renunciation of evil and profession of faith in the redemptive power of the Cross of Christ.
Power of Exorcism: The Church recognizes the Medal and the Saint Benedict Cross as a sacramental with great power of exorcism. The tradition of the cross dates back to the life of Saint Benedict himself, who used it to protect himself from temptations and attempts at poisoning.
On one occasion, upon making the Sign of the Cross over a cup of poisoned wine, the chalice reportedly broke, and on another, a poisoned loaf of bread was taken away by a raven.
Protection Against Evil: Devotion to the Cross and the Medal is associated with protection against:
Malefices and witchcraft.
Illnesses and epidemics.
Spiritual dangers and temptations of the devil.
Condition of Use: For the sacramental to be effective, the Church emphasizes that it does not function as an “amulet.” Its power depends on the faith and dispositions of the faithful, and it is highly recommended that the user be in a state of grace (after confession).
Special Blessing: The medal must be blessed by a priest with the special prayer of exorcism provided in the Catholic ritual.
In summary, the Saint Benedict Cross is a visible sign of Christ’s authority over the forces of darkness, reminding the faithful of the power that resides in obedience and fidelity to God.
