History and Legend of the Origin
The devotion to the Caravaca Cross is closely linked to the city of Caravaca de la Cruz, in the Region of Murcia, Spain, which is one of the five places in the world with the title of “Holy City” granted by the Pope.
- The Relic: The reliquary of the cross contains, according to tradition, fragments of the Lignum Crucis, or Holy Wood – pieces of the wood upon which Jesus Christ was crucified. The original cross is an Eastern relic, said to have belonged to Patriarch Robert of Jerusalem.
- The Medieval Legend (13th Century): The most famous legend tells that, in 1232, during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, Sheikh Al-Azraq, a Muslim leader, imprisoned a Christian priest. Curious, he asked the priest to celebrate a mass. At the crucial moment of the celebration, the priest stopped, saying he was missing a cross. Suddenly, two angels appeared, descending from heaven and bringing the Caravaca Cross to the altar. Impressed by the miracle, the Sheikh and his family converted to Christianity.
- Connection with the Templars: Devotion to the relic of the Holy Wood was spread by the religious orders of the time, including the Knights Templar and the Order of Santiago, who were successively the holders of the Caravaca castle.
Meaning and Symbolism
The unique shape of the Caravaca Cross is filled with symbolism:
- Two Horizontal Arms: They represent doubled faith or the duality of human existence:
- The upper, shorter arm symbolizes the spiritual and celestial level.
- The lower, longer arm symbolizes the material and earthly level.
- The union of these two arms on the vertical shaft (which is the life of Christ) constitutes the essence of humanity.
- Spiritual Protection: The two arms also symbolize protection against evil on two levels: the physical and the spiritual.
- The Angels: Many representations of the cross include two angel figures at the base of the longer arm, carrying or supporting the Cross. These figures are often identified as the Archangels Saint Michael (protection and justice) and Saint Gabriel (messenger and protector).
