Core Themes of the Requiem Arcana
This deck would focus on three conceptual pillars:
Passage and Impermanence: The cards would use symbolism of old cemeteries, relics, ruins, and the passage of time. The Wheel of Fortune could be represented as a weathered epitaph, and The World as the final circle of acceptance of death and rebirth. Shadow Work: The Requiem Arcana would be a powerful tool for confronting regrets, losses, and the aspects of the personality that have been repressed. It does not offer easy “good news,” but rather the necessary truth for deep healing. Melancholic Beauty: The aesthetic would not necessarily be dark, but rather elegant and nostalgic, perhaps inspired by Victorian or Gothic art. The use of sepia colors, deep blacks, and touches of silver or aged gold would give a reverent tone to the reading.
Interpretation of the Arcana
Major Arcana: Would focus on the great transitions of life and the acceptance of mortality. The Hermit card would be a figure in deep grief, seeking wisdom in the solitude of memory. Death would be the serene liberation of the soul. Minor Arcana: The suits would be interpreted through the lens of loss and resilience:
Cups: Would deal with heartbreak, longing (saudade), and healing through tears.
Swords: Would focus on the mental clarity that comes from pain and the cutting of old ties.
Wands: Would represent the willpower that is reborn after grief.
Pentacles (Ouros): Would address material inheritance and the legacy we leave behind.
